The Bible and Personality Disorders

There are about ten different types of personality disorders, but some themes tie them together. They are characterized by distorted thinking patterns, problematic emotional responses, over- or under-regulated impulse control, and interpersonal difficulties.

There are at least two examples of personality disorder in the Bible: Samson and Gomer. See their stories below.

Samson is a classic example of narcissistic personality disorder. He is driven by a need for attention and wants people to admire him. He lacks the ability to understand or care about the feelings of others.

Gomer is a classic example of someone with borderline personality disorder. She is plagued by identity questions, sexual extremes, and unstable relationships.
